Here at Glass and Mirror Solutions we offer you the unique opportunity to order your made to measure, cut to sizes mirrors safely online and have them delivered directly to your door. I will explain here how we measure our mirrors to give you the confidence to measure your own mirrors.

When measuring a mirror to fit in between tiles or in an alcove what we do is we measure the tight size which is wall to wall or tile to tile and we deduct 5mm from it. This will leave enough room for us the fit the mirror without damaging it but leaving it tight enough that it fills the whole space. We will then even up the gap leaving 2-3mm on all sides of the mirror which can be sealed or filled depending on your preference. We would always recommend using 6mm mirror for applications like this.

It is very important to measure more than one point of the wall when finding your size. We would always measure the left and right for the height and the top and bottom for the width also measuring a point in between on larger mirrors. This way you will be able to tell if the wall is square or not. In cases when there is a big difference between the left and right or top and bottom sizes it is possible to cut the mirror off square to suit the gap. We usually only do this when the difference is more the 5mm as anything less can be hidden with sealant.

When measuring things like wardrobe doors or cabinet doors it is important to check to make sure that there isn’t hinges or handles in the way. If there is what we will do is measure tight to the hinges and leave the same gap around all sides leaving the door with a nice even border. 4mm mirror is perfect for use on doors as its light weight won’t over strain the hinges.

I hope this helps you out a bit. If you have any doubts or questions please don’t hesitate to contact us, we are happy to help.
